Demobilization Shipping Support  In general, Primary Investigators (PIs), and ultimately the Chief Scientist (CS), are responsible for shipping arrangements for their mission’s science gear from the demobilization pier location.  However, recognizing that it is not always cost-effective for PIs to travel to Seattle specifically to husband their often small amounts of gear to an appropriate shipping provider, the Coast Guard will provide the following levels of limited shipping assistance on a pre-arranged basis.  The CS will be responsible for providing a master list of all departing shipments to the MSO prior to departing HEALY at the conclusion of their respective science mission.  The master list should include a break-down of the category (listed below) of each.  All shipments from Healy should be documented in the Healy shipping web site at http://www.icefloe.net/shipping/.  It is expected that science personnel will liaise between the shipper and Healy.

Level A – For smaller packages (up to 70 lbs and dimensions up to 108 inches in length & 165 inches in length plus girth [length+2width+2depth]) shipping via Fedex from homeport (Coast Guard Base Support Unit Seattle).  PI must pack the box/boxes, complete the Fedex shipping paperwork with appropriate account number/s (provided by PI), complete any necessary HAZMAT documentation (provided by the PI), and have packages inspected by HEALY’s Supply Division personnel prior to departing the ship at the conclusion of their respective science mission.  If these steps are taken, HEALY will ensure the packages are removed from the ship and the Supply Department will ensure they are transported from the ship to Shipping & Receiving on the Coast Guard base in Seattle within 7 working days of HEALY’s return to homeport for shipping.

Level B – For larger packages being shipped via Fedex freight from homeport (Coast Guard Base Support Unit, Seattle), up to a maximum of 3 packages.  By arrangement prior to departure from HEALY at the conclusion of the respective science mission, assistance may be arranged from HEALY’s science liaison in Seattle for Shipping via Base Support Unit Seattle’s Shipping & Receiving office.  In this case, PIs must secure their packages, complete the appropriate shipping paperwork (provided by the PI), complete any necessary HAZMAT documentation (provided by the PI) and have their packages inspected by HEALY’s Supply Division prior to departure from the ship at the conclusion of their respective science mission.  In this case, HEALY will ensure the packages are transported to Base Support Unit Seattle’s Shipping & Receiving office within 7 working days of HEALY’s return to homeport for shipping.  HEALY’s science liaison will husband the shipments through the Shipping & Receiving office and liaison with the respective PI as necessary.

Level C – Larger volumes/weights of equipment or shipments from other-than homeport (Base Support Unit, Seattle).  For all other shipments of PI science gear from HEALY, the respective PI (and ultimately the CS), will be responsible to arrange appropriate pick-up service on the date and at the designated location of the mission’s scheduled science offload.  HEALY crew will remove gear from the ship to the pier on the scheduled science offload day/s, however further transport from the pier will be the responsibility of the respective PI and, ultimately, the CS for the mission.
