MEALS
Meals will be served at the scheduled times, but will be flexible according to ongoing operations. Watch reliefs will have head of the line privileges. Midnight rations are served at 2300 and are usually simple leftovers, and snacks are also usually available throughout the day on the messdeck. You are more than welcome to help yourself to these items.
CLOTHING AND MUSTANG SUITS
Comfortable, clean clothing is acceptable on the messdeck (i.e. Jeans and T-shirt in good repair). However, we ask that you not come directly from deck operations to the Messdeck. Please do not wear cold weather gear to meals.
FRESH WATER
Fresh water is a precious commodity aboard ship. The use of "sea showers" may be mandatory at times. A sea shower entails turning the water on only to wet down and to rinse off with no more than 2 minutes of running water consumption. Soap up with the water turned off and turn the water on to rinse.
LAUNDRY
The use of laundry facilities is scheduled and Sundays are designated days for scientists and guests. In addition, you must bring your own liquid laundry detergent as it is not provided. Laundry detergent may be purchased onboard through our Ship's Store. Please be considerate of others and remove your laundry from a machine as soon as it is finished.
TRASH
The science party will be asked to sort their trash in accordance with a few ecological rules observed by the ship. Trash is separated into burnable and non-burnable categories. Items that cannot be burned in the incinerator will be stored in the CONEX box until it can be disposed of. All members of the science party will receive information on trash handling procedures once onboard.
GYM
The Gym is located on the main deck in the forward part of the ship. There are several weight machines, bikes, treadmills, and other typical weight room items. You are welcome to use any of this equipment, but please wipe down equipment and stow everything for sea when you are finished.
SECURING FOR SEA
Keeping your personal and scientific gear SECURED FOR SEA can not be emphasized enough. POLAR SEA will roll and pitch in rough weather and seas, and will experience vibration during icebreaking. The ship cannot be held responsible for damage caused by poor stowage or a failure to properly secure gear. If you have any questions regarding proper stowage procedures, consult with one of our Marine Science Technicians (MST).
